Colchicum ‘Pink Star’

What we first purchased as Colchicum x byzantinum and have been offering under that name until now is certainly one of our most floriferous Colchicums and is easily noticed as being distinct in its floral color and shape. Of all the clones and species we grow, this is the one closest to true pink, and might even best be described as a clear pale pink. The blooms first open cup shaped, but soon the petals spread apart and the flower flattens a bit. My thanks go out to faithful customer and self-proclaimed nomenclature wonk Bob Nold of Colorado, who suggested I check out the photo and description of ‘Pink Star’ in the Royal Horticultural Society’s recent monograph Colchicum: The Complete Guide. Our stocks possess every single detail discussed under that entry, so I feel very secure that this is indeed the correct name for the plant we used to grow as byzantinum. (See the entry autumnale ‘Major’ above to read more about the real Colchicum x byzantinum) Early to mid Sept.
